Calculator Vault Apps: How the Disguise Works
What a calculator disguise changes on an iPhone, the parts of iOS it does not cover, and why the disguise is never the part that protects your files.
A calculator vault app looks and works like a calculator on your home screen. Typing a code you set opens the vault behind it. The disguise changes what someone sees when they glance at your phone, and nothing else. It does not change how your files are stored, and it does not hold up against someone examining the phone rather than glancing at it. Whether your photos are actually protected depends only on whether the app encrypts them. That is a separate question from the disguise.
A calculator disguise is one of the oldest ideas in this category, and one of the most misunderstood. It is easy to show off and it looks clever. It also gets talked about far more than the thing that actually decides whether your photos are safe. This page explains what the disguise does, what it does not do, and why those are separate questions from whether your files are encrypted. It is written for adults managing privacy on their own phones.
1. What a calculator vault is
An app that shows up on the home screen as a calculator rather than as what it is. It works as a calculator. Typing a particular code, instead of a sum, opens the vault behind it.
Obscura Photo Vault includes this as Calculator Mode. You can turn it on and off inside the app. Whether it is on makes no difference to how your photos are stored. The encryption is the same either way. That separation is the whole point of this page.
2. What the disguise changes
One thing, and it is a real thing: what a person sees on your home screen.
The realistic situation is a glance. Someone picks up your phone to look at something, or scrolls past your home screen, or watches over your shoulder while you use it. An icon labelled as a photo vault invites a question. A calculator does not.
That is a modest benefit, and a genuine one. A lot of everyday privacy is about not starting a conversation, not about surviving an investigation.
3. What it does not cover
We say this in our own security paper, not just in a guide, because it is a limit and limits belong in the documentation:
"The presence of Obscura on a device is visible to anyone inspecting the home screen or App Store purchase history."
Four things follow from that. They are worth saying bluntly.
The trick is widely known
Calculator vaults are not a secret. They are discussed all over social media and in consumer tech writing. Some people will check a calculator on a phone precisely because they have heard of this. A disguise works against someone who is not looking. It does not work against someone who is.
It covers the home screen, not the whole phone
The disguise changes one screen. The record of what has been downloaded to the phone, and the places where iOS lists installed apps and their storage, are separate. A disguise on the home screen does not reach them.
It is not built for examination
Anyone inspecting the phone properly, rather than glancing at it, is beyond what a disguise can do. It is the same kind of limit as in our guide to plausible deniability. These features create doubt for a casual observer. They are not guarantees against a determined one.
It protects nothing about the files
A disguise changes an icon. It does not change one byte of how your photos are stored. If the app behind it does not encrypt files, everything is readable the moment anyone gets past the calculator. And the calculator was the only thing standing there.
4. Two separate questions
The most useful way to think about it: a vault app answers two questions that have nothing to do with each other.

The second row is where nearly all the real protection lives. It is also the one that gets the least attention, because encryption is invisible and a calculator is not.
That leads to the mistake worth avoiding: picking an app for a convincing disguise and assuming the storage underneath must be just as serious. The two have nothing to do with each other. An app with a plain icon and real encryption protects your photos better than a beautifully disguised one that only puts a PIN screen in front of ordinary files.

5. When it is genuinely useful
Given all of the above, it would be easy to decide the feature is pointless. That is not our view, and we would not include it if it were.
A disguise is useful in exactly the situation it was made for: making it less likely that a private app becomes a topic in the first place. Shared and borrowed phones. A phone left on a desk. Handing someone your phone to show them a photo. Using your phone next to other people. In all of these the realistic risk is an unexpected glance, and a calculator is a good answer to a glance.
The mistake is not using it. The mistake is counting it as security. Treat it as one fewer question asked, and let the encryption do the protecting.
If someone has a reason to search your phone and knows what to look for, a disguise is the wrong tool, and no app feature is the right one. That is a problem in the world, not in software, and it deserves better help than a settings switch.

An app with real encryption protects them whether or not it looks like a calculator. Judge the encryption, not the disguise.
Can you tell if an app is a calculator vault?
Often, yes. The trick is widely known and widely talked about. A disguise also only covers the home screen. The app still shows in the record of what has been downloaded to the phone. And a disguise is not built to hold up against someone examining the phone rather than glancing at it.
Does Calculator Mode make Obscura Photo Vault more secure?
No, and we would rather say so plainly. The encryption is exactly the same whether Calculator Mode is on or off. It changes what the app looks like, nothing else.
Is a calculator vault better than the built-in Hidden album?
They solve different halves of the problem, so it is not a fair comparison. The Hidden album keeps photos out of sight inside Photos but opens with your phone passcode. A disguise hides an app icon but says nothing about how files are stored. What decides it, in both cases, is whether the files are encrypted with a key that is not your phone passcode. If you would rather your home screen did not raise the question, yes. Just do not let it change how carefully you look at the encryption underneath. That is the part doing the work.
